Skoda has just introduced his new compact sedan in Tel Aviv (Israel) Scala, The Czech brand of the Volkswagen Group has chosen this country because it occupies the place of the European import brands. Skoda sells 200,000 vehicles in Israel every year.
The Skoda Scala will take over the Skoda Rapid Spaceback with great ambitions in June 2019. If the background remains almost the same: silhouette of the hatchback sedan, the shape changes radically.
The dress of the Skoda Scala is much more elaborate and announces the future stylistic development of the future models of the brand. Headlamps and lights are more expressive and use LED light technology. Note that the rear turn signals in the Volkswagen Group are passable. This equipment is no longer reserved for Audi only.
Another element that illustrates the upward movement is the cover that covers the wings, according to a process dedicated by the flagship Skoda Superb in the series. This architecture requires a parallelogram mechanism that is more expensive than conventional hinges.
To maximize brand awareness and immediately identify Scala as belonging to the Skoda product line, the logo on the tailgate has been replaced with clearly explicit lettering. It took a while to do the same thing on the hub of the steering wheel, but this is not the case in the end. It will be the next generation of Skoda Octavia entitled to do so.
To complete the tour of the owner of this compact sedan with five doors, which is 4.36 m long and rests on a wheelbase of 2.65 m, note a panoramic glass roof. It blends perfectly with the tailgate window to the license plate. We regret that the roof remains firm, but the 75 cm wide and 115 cm long glass surface illuminates the cabin without any transverse distance from the front seats to the rear seats.
A modern interior
Let's take space on board. Again the break with the predecessor is obvious, the presentation and quality of the materials is really advanced. The dashboard is decorated with a horizontal band that can be treated like light wood, bronze or silver. The interior lighting lets you choose between two shades: white or red.
Compared to the driver, the 100% digital instrumentation works on a 10.25 inch disk. It is offered as an option. In this modern atmosphere, the large touchscreen at the top of the center console is especially striking. With a diagonal of 9.2 inches on the highest quality versions of the Scala, it has a size of 8 inches for intermediate finish and 6.5 inches for entry. It is very appealing and the menu organization is intuitive and easy to use.
A little further down, the climate control interface offers good ergonomics. Temperature control is always available through the two circular buttons, and the advanced features are available via the touchscreen for more convenience. After all, it's the right compromise between minimalism in control and ease of use.
On the back of the switch, a button selects one of four driving modes: Eco, Normal, Sport and Individual. Technology that has not proposed its predecessor.
However, we regret the lack of electric parking brake control. An "antique" lever spoils all modernity. This is done by the technical platform MQB A0 where the Scala is located, a base that shares it with the Volkswagen Polo, the Seat Ibiza and the new Audi A1 Sportback. Skoda justifies this decision with weight gain and cost.
The prices of the Skoda Scala will be published in January 2019. It will be slightly more expensive than the Rapid Spaceback (from € 20,490 in TSI 95PS Clever), but more accessible than a Golf (from € 23,250 in TSI 115 hp in Trendline version).
An inviting compact
Skoda has always relied on livability, so Scala is logically expected on the turn. She does not make a mistake. Access to the rear seats is facilitated by the large doors and the high flag (1.47 m) and is rather shallow. The space is generous for two adults and the presentation is neat. Through the counterpart runs a chrome ring, which emphasizes the opening handle. A bright medallion matches the leather and Alcantara cushions.
In addition, there are air conditioning jets in the back of the center console and below that there are two USB-C jacks for quick charging of the smartphone and other connected objects. The central space is slightly less comfortable, the seat and backrest are tighter, while the servitude tunnel is uncomfortable for the feet.
Almost perfect modularity
Another key chapter for Skoda, the boot volume. Again, the Scala with a capacity of 467 l under tablet in configuration with 5 places does not disappoint. This is significantly better than the segment average below 400 l. Bank folded, it has 1 410 l. The threshold is not too high (65 cm) and the double bottom allows a completely flat floor and at the threshold.
The only drawback is the lack of zippers to fold the backrest of the bench 2 / 3-1 / 3 out of the trunk. Skoda Scala Review
The Skoda Scala made a good impression. His style is pleasant, his presentation and his equipment are worthwhile. It is habitable and inviting and up-to-date in a highly competitive market segment in Europe. The few complaints about modularity or the parking brake lever are the price that must be paid to keep tariffs soft. Arbitration is essential in order not to compete head-on with the Seat Leon and especially with the Volkswagen Golf.
